Paying for your Mistakes

by Alyssa Ast

Let's face, not every pregnancy is perfect, and not every birth is perfect. There are many things that can go wrong, which are often unpredictable. As a result, the baby you thought was going to be the happy, healthy bundle of joy you were expecting is born with some difficulties. Although, many times this happens without any cause, it's just something that happens, other times these complications are somewhat expected when a mother makes poor choices while they are carrying a child.

It makes no sense to me, how women aren't willing to sacrifice their body and destructive lifestyles for 9 months, and as a result, an innocent child ends up suffering, sometimes, life long complications because of their mother's selfishness. And, what really gets me, is afterwards the mother expects you to feel sorry for the situation they are in. Maybe it's just me, but I don't feel sorry for the mother, but the baby, who had no choice in the situation and is now left with struggles they never should have experienced. And in the end, it just makes me want to yell at the mother, who acts surprised by the baby's situation.

Did you really think your baby was going to be fine as you puffed away like a chimney for the past 9 months? You didn't expect the baby to suffer any consequences as you sucked down all that alcohol? It's not like we live in a time that lacks easily accessible information. The results of what can happen to a baby if you make poor choices are common knowledge. You know what can and probably will happen should you make these choices while pregnant, and then you expect sympathy in return?

Call me heartless if you'd like, but no, I don't feel sorry for the mother, but the baby, who was just the innocent pawn. Which leaves me thinking, the mother doesn't deserve that baby if she couldn't make necessary sacrifices before the child was even born.

So, don't come crying to me about how hard it is to raise a baby with special needs, when you're the cause of it. In my opinion, the mother should be punished for the baby suffering, but unfortunately, even the harshest of punishments will never be enough to give that baby the start he deserved.

Am I being judgmental? Absolutely! Don't let your reckless behavior harm your child before he even takes his first breath.
